The Make Haus
A four-by-four-metre San Francisco terrace facade for a Sephora trade show that went up effortlessly, flooded social feeds and went viral inside the brand's global teams.
"They Saw the Idea. Then They Made It Real."
DANIELLE DEAN — FOUNDER, THE MAKE HAUS
The Make Haus is a creative studio specialising in set builds, activations, interiors, botanicals and event production. When founder Danielle Dean needed a build partner who could keep pace with her creative ambition and hold the line on every detail, she found Traction Studio.
BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP
Danielle Dean didn't plan to start a business. She was working in production for a fashion company, picking up the jobs that nobody else wanted: visual merchandising, sourcing, the unglamorous back-end work that kept creative projects moving. She noticed a gap. She jumped at it. And then she discovered she was good at it.
Eight years later, The Make Haus has produced over a dozen events for one of the world's biggest beauty brands, built a reputation for work that stops people in their tracks, and grown into a studio that creates semi-permanent and permanent experiential worlds for clients across the country.
But the path from one person picking up odd jobs to a fully-fledged creative studio wasn't without its friction.
"You'd often put your hand up to do it without realising how to exactly do it. I used to always struggle with not so much making the item, but then realising how to deliver it, and that I physically couldn't do that alone at times."
Finding the right build partner wasn't just a practical necessity. It was the thing that made the bigger ideas possible.
THE EVENT THAT HAD TO REINVENT ITSELF TWICE A YEAR
Sephora's beauty trade shows are not a small ask. Held biannually, they bring together influencers, internal teams and global delegates for an event that has to feel entirely fresh every single time. Twelve events across eight years. Twelve briefs that all say the same thing in different ways: create a beauty universe nobody has seen before.
For Danielle and The Make Haus, that pressure is a creative engine. But delivering on a concept that exists only in your head, at scale, in a venue, on a deadline, while simultaneously managing 50 global delegates and every other element of a complex production, requires more than creative vision.
It requires a build partner you can trust completely.
"Having the support and the reassurance is really comforting when you're not only managing that one set, but you might be doing 15 other things on that project that all need to line up."
A FOUR-BY-FOUR-METRE IDEA
For one of the Sephora events at Machine Hall, Danielle arrived with a vision: a facade of a house, roughly four by four metres tall, styled like a San Francisco terrace, that influencers would walk through as they entered the space. Bold, architectural, entirely unlike anything a beauty event had done before.
It was, by her own admission, a bit of a wild idea.
Traction Studio didn't flinch.
"Traction came on board, understood my scope to a T, and were able to get the scale, really hone in on the details that I specifically wanted, and seamlessly set it up and removed it. And it just looked unreal."
The facade was bright orange. Unmissable. From the moment it went up during bump-in, it commanded attention, with other vendors stopping to watch as the structure rose effortlessly into place in the middle of a busy production floor.
"A lot of people saw us bumping in so many things and then seeing the facade go up really quite effortlessly. It's sort of like a show within that event before everyone gets to see it. And it's always impressive and fun when people are like, 'Wow, who's doing that? Where is that from?'"
WHEN THE BUILD GOES VIRAL
The results went well beyond the room.
Guest posts from the day flooded social media, and the bright orange facade appeared in virtually every photo. But the real measure of the build's impact came from within Sephora's own global network, where the Australian event began circulating among teams in other countries.
"It became quite iconic and really viral within the internal Sephora teams, of what each trade show did in other countries. You sort of notice how other places somewhat replicate what you've tried to do, and it's always good to have been the first."
For Danielle, that virality wasn't the goal. It was the by-product of getting the build exactly right.
"We just want to deliver something really cool for that time. Something that feels a bit unseen and original."
THE PROCESS THAT MAKES IT FEEL EASY
What Danielle values most about working with Traction Studio isn't any single build. It's the feeling that a complex, high-stakes production is genuinely under control.
"From the first call, it's very structured. You can't jump through a hoop without completing one section. That's really important and helpful in getting clarity as to how big a project can be and what needs to happen in that sign-off process. Nothing's been overlooked."
In a production environment where the build is just one of a dozen moving parts, that structure is the difference between a creative director who can focus and one who is constantly firefighting.
"Every person that had their part in the project delivered what we needed, on time, in budget. And then seamlessly removed, managed and closed out the job. You just need that idea, and then they orchestrate it."
A PARTNERSHIP BUILT ON TRUST
Eight years in, Danielle doesn't describe her relationship with Traction Studio as a supplier arrangement. She describes it as one of the most important creative partnerships her business has.
"No idea that I send their way just feels outrageous or not possible. And I think that's really comforting and really important when dealing with these high-pressure builds."
That comfort, she says, has changed the way The Make Haus thinks about what it can offer clients.
"Through working with Traction, I discovered that as a business, we can really start evolving what our ideas are and think beyond the boundaries of what we felt comfortable making ourselves."
FOR CREATIVES WHO THINK BIG
"If you're wanting to do something that is structured and well-managed and has a really nice, big team of resources behind it, then you need to use them. There's really nothing they can't achieve."
